Each summer the faithful of Santa Fe gather to ensure that Don Diego de Vargas’ promise is kept to honor the oldest Marian statue in the United States, Nuestra Senora de la Paz, La Conquistadora. This beautiful tradition begins with the knighting and coronation mass for the individuals selected to portray the roles of Don Diego de Vargas, his cuadrilla, La Reina de la Fiesta de Santa Fe™, and her royal court.
Immediately after, hundreds of New Mexicans retrace their ancestor’s footsteps and process to Rosario Chapel. Dignitaries, Santa Fe Fiesta Council Members, parishioners, and clergy of the various parishes all process in honor of our lady. La Conquistadora is carried as rose petals are strewn in front of her as she makes her annual pilgrimage to Rosario Chapel.
June 10, 2013 – June 16, 2013
Once at Rosario Chapel, the faithful flock to pay homage to the 29 inch Marian figure, La Conquistadora, which first arrived at this site on September 13, 1692. A week-long series of masses are celebrated daily at 6 AM and 5:15 PM. The novena is nine successive days of prayer in honor of Don Diego de Vargas’ request for a special intercessory grace upon his arrival in 1692.

Hundreds of New Mexicans retrace their ancestor’s footsteps as La Conquistadora is carried back to the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, which is the site of her original church, La Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Asunción.

The ninth and finale day of the novena is held at the home of La Conquistadora.
The procession and novena to Our Lady is a tradition that has been carried out by the faithful of Santa Fe for many years. These spiritual events take place in the City of Holy Faith which is rich with culture, heritage, and faith. An experience that one should not miss.
